How Did Ice Hockey Appear?

Nowadays we can see a huge popularity in ice hockey. There are different countries where hockey enjoyed the biggest possible popularity. This is a team sport that will always be played on an ice surface. Skaters are using different sticks to direct and move a puck towards the opponent team’s goal. This is a sport that is really physical and fast. In most cases a country that has hockey high on the popularity list is also a country that has colder environments. Very good examples can be Sweden, Finland, Russia and Canada. The official wintersport of Canada is ice hockey and this is where this sport gained most of its current popularity.

Ice hockey does have its origins a long time ago. Montreal stands out as the city where modern ice hockey actually started developing. 1875 was the year in which the first ice hockey game was held indoors. The game evolved as time passed and the first championship of the world took place in 1883. In the beginning a team had 9 members, then 7 members. After just two years passed we saw the birth of Montreal City Hockey League. What is interesting is that in the year 1893 we actually saw around 100 teams that were based in Montreal. USA did have a similar game that was being played called ice polo. All eventually evolved towards this game that is nowadays loved by so many people around the world.

Nowadays all players have equipment in order to protect most body parts. This is definitely because a lot of injuries appear with ice hockey. Unfortunately a lot of serious injuries can take place because skaters will travel even at speeds of 50 KM per hour and we are in front of a really fast paced game. Unfortunately many players are sometimes forced to retire due to serious injuries suffered on the ice. Head injuries are really damaging and you will actually see concussions and even face cuts quite commonly.

Even if we are basically faced with a team sport that is really brutal this did not stop it from developing a huge fan base. It is one sport that is manly and few women are playing it or even enjoy watching it. Fights do happen on the ice and penalties are quite common. Ice hockey stands out as a really powerful game from a lot of point of views.
